Summary

Don't miss this New York Times bestselling "impossible to put down" (Buzzfeed) novel with deadly stakes, thrilling twists, and juicy secrets--perfect for fans of One of Us is Lying and Knives Out

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out。 But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune。 The catch? Avery has no idea why -- or even who Tobias Hawthorne is。

To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch -- and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes。 Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed。 This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions。 Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he's determined to take her down。 His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved。 Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive。

This book had me hooked from the first word till the last one and it deserves all praise for that because it’s been YEARS since that happened。 I literally read it in two sittings。 But about the book itself: Everything about the Hawthorne family captures your attention the second you meet them。 They are all different, and unique and kinda twisted and broken and that’s all it was needed to bring me in。 I ended up loving, specially, the Hawthorne boys with their secrets, and riddles and charming pe This book had me hooked from the first word till the last one and it deserves all praise for that because it’s been YEARS since that happened。 I literally read it in two sittings。 But about the book itself: Everything about the Hawthorne family captures your attention the second you meet them。 They are all different, and unique and kinda twisted and broken and that’s all it was needed to bring me in。 I ended up loving, specially, the Hawthorne boys with their secrets, and riddles and charming personalities。 You never know where each of them it’s going to turn to。 Living in Hawthorne House meant finding out new secrets and new pieces of the puzzles (plural, because the boys are as much a puzzle as the ones Tobias Hawthorne left) left and right, and every secret opened new doors and new questions。 I adored Avery。 From the get go we understand she’s smart, but even more importantly, she proves it through the entire story。 She doesn’t let her feeling cloud her better judgment either。 It’s a character that I enjoyed reading about a lot。 The only thing I have left to talk about it’s the goddamn love triangle。 Most people, for what I’ve seen, would tell you they can’t choose between Grayson and Jameson but I don’t have that problem。 I love all the Hawthorne boys but I adore Grayson。 I kinda hated him at first, but soon enough I had fallen for the guy。 Although, I imagine the fact that I spent most of the book actively distrusting Jameson has something to do with my bias。 Either way, I can’t wait to get my hands on the second book and find out what’s going to happen next。 。。。more

This was so fun! The mystery, the puzzles, it kept me hooked。 Definitely see the Knives Out comparisons。 The side romace(s?) I could have done without but it didn’t spoil the book for me。 Looking forward to book 2!

I've expected so much more。。。 The book is an epitome of "great idea, bad execution"。 Also, there were too many du Maurier's "Rebecca" references for my taste。 I've expected so much more。。。 The book is an epitome of "great idea, bad execution"。 Also, there were too many du Maurier's "Rebecca" references for my taste。 。。。more

I picked up this book and then all the sudden it was a few hours later and I was 100+ pages in。 In fact, I finished this book in two days。 This book may not outright be a dark academia novel, but it gives off a lot of the same vibes that a dark academia book would。 If you like mystery, puzzles, fortune, sibling rivalry, academics, ect。 then you'll love this book。 It's a quick and enjoyable read to say the least。 I picked up this book and then all the sudden it was a few hours later and I was 100+ pages in。 In fact, I finished this book in two days。 This book may not outright be a dark academia novel, but it gives off a lot of the same vibes that a dark academia book would。 If you like mystery, puzzles, fortune, sibling rivalry, academics, ect。 then you'll love this book。 It's a quick and enjoyable read to say the least。 。。。more

This one hurt my soul。 The idea is great and I'm all about the puzzles。 The execution was painful and I'm generally pretty forgiving of not great writing。I can forgive a lot, but the book wouldn't allow the reader to make a single inference。 It assumes you're an idiot who can't remember anything ever。 Instead, Avery narratives every thought imaginable in an endless cycle。 Expect to have every quote repeated for you 500 times with a reminder of exactly who said it and when。 Expect Avery to ask ev This one hurt my soul。 The idea is great and I'm all about the puzzles。 The execution was painful and I'm generally pretty forgiving of not great writing。I can forgive a lot, but the book wouldn't allow the reader to make a single inference。 It assumes you're an idiot who can't remember anything ever。 Instead, Avery narratives every thought imaginable in an endless cycle。 Expect to have every quote repeated for you 500 times with a reminder of exactly who said it and when。 Expect Avery to ask every thing as an idiotic question over and over and over and over again。 Honestly the book could be half the length if it was actually edited。 And the love triangle is just cringey。The audiobook is a tough listen too (god those Texas accents are terrible) but at least I could put it one 1。5x speed and use the 15 sec skip button to fly through。 。。。more

ok, this book was so good。 i’ve been wanting to read it for a LONG time now and i’m so glad that i finally got the chance to read it。 this mystery novel was so confusing but also so great at the same time。 tbh it felt like so much info was being thrown at me at once that it was hard to take in, but once you take a few seconds to think about it, you see the whole story coming togetherthis story and plot was so well done。 i didn’t expect myself to love it so much。 all of the characters were so wel ok, this book was so good。 i’ve been wanting to read it for a LONG time now and i’m so glad that i finally got the chance to read it。 this mystery novel was so confusing but also so great at the same time。 tbh it felt like so much info was being thrown at me at once that it was hard to take in, but once you take a few seconds to think about it, you see the whole story coming togetherthis story and plot was so well done。 i didn’t expect myself to love it so much。 all of the characters were so well done and it felt like you were part of the story the whole time。 avery and jameson are the power duo that everyone needs to read about。 i give grayson credit for trying to squeeze himself in there, but they were the true combo。 this book is very much like the movie knives out。 like very similar。 which, side note, if you’ve never seen knives out, you’re missing out。 that movie is so good。 this book was full of riddles and misdirections and games and it was so fun to read。 i couldn’t put it down。 and…。 the chapters were so short。 i loved it :)honestly if you haven’t read this book, you’re missing out。 read it。 now i just have to wait for the second book to come out in paperback。 let the waiting commence。 。。。more

I have a bit of commentary that I would like to add(Spoilers ahead!) First off, considering that Avery is supposed to be extremely clever, she has no idea when she is being used。 Like cmon, you thought that Jameson kissing you at his dead ex-girlfriend’s house was a good idea? Speaking of Jameson, he needs therapy。 Actually, all of them need therapy。 The only logical person in that family was Alexander, and my favorite。 I really hope I see him more in Book 2 because he is extremely underrated! Speaking of Jameson, he needs therapy。 Actually, all of them need therapy。 The only logical person in that family was Alexander, and my favorite。 I really hope I see him more in Book 2 because he is extremely underrated! I think I would have liked the book a lot more if there wasn’t a love triangle between Avery, Grayson, and Jameson。 It wouldn’t have been so bad if Avery wasn’t a replacement for their dead ex girlfriend。 I know that Emily’s death was needed for the plot, but I absolutely hated it every time she was brought up。 The more you read about her, the more you realize that she was not a good person。 The fact that her own sister basically implied that she wasn’t speaks for itself。 I did feel sorry for her due to her health issues and obviously her death, but she manipulated everyone around her。 The fact that her sister had to hide her relationship because it didn’t revolve around her AND THEN she two timed the Hawthorne brothers!? I also got extremely annoyed that anytime she was brought up they always have to bring up that she “wanted to live life to the fullest”。 I know it’s supposed to be ironic but still。 It was painfully obvious that Jameson wanted to replace Emily with Avery。 I don’t know if this is true with Grayson, but my money is on Grayson ending up with Avery。 Avery really should have listened to Alisa’s advice about dating a Hawthorne。 I am actually very curious about Alisa’s and Nash’s relationship。 I can’t help but feel bad for Alisa, as her sole job is to work for her ex-fiancé’s family, and she has to watch her ex-fiancé flirt with her new client’s sister。 She needs to find a new job。 I hope that in between the first and second book they all have a group therapy session, because all of them need to work on their emotional intelligence。 It’s not like they can’t afford it。 My final thought is about Tobias。 Tobias stalked Avery for her most of her entire life, but didn’t help at all? Not after her mom died or after she was basically homeless? He was a billionaire!!! I am planning to read the second book, so hopefully we can find more about Avery’s past。 。。。more
